Three generations of Captain
In fact, not much has changed since 1946. A Kaptein still bakes fresh breads, rolls, croissants, pies, cookies, cakes and many more delicacies on the Windlustweg every working day. Just like his grandfather more than seventy years ago, Jeroen gets up every day at four to heat his ovens and knead the dough. Only in this way can he offer fresh loaves of bread and other pastries every day that his grandfather would be proud of...
In 1946, the first generation of Kaptein settled at Windlustweg 15 in the building from 1928 after a design by architect Bordewijk. J.W. Kaptein, known as Joop, takes over the Frisian bakery, the newspaper says. Joop Kaptein (1917) is a farmer's son from Hazerswoude with an aptitude for the baker's trade.
During the Second World War he works in a bakery in Leidschendam. After the war, he takes over the bakery with financial help from his father. Only a year later he moved into the upstairs apartment with his wife. Five children are born of the marriage. Niek, Joop's son, is following an education at the Bisschoppelijke Nijverheidsschool in Voorhout, before going to work in Leiden and The Hague. But of course he learns the tricks of the trade from his father. At the beginning of the 1970s, Niek joined Joop in the business and a few years later Niek continued the bakery under his name. Just like his father, he also moves into the living area of the historic building above the bakery. The bakery still bears his name even though it was taken over by his son Jeroen a few years ago. With this third generation, the future is assured.
